African American Scholarships – Minority Scholarships For African Americans

There is no denying that a good college education is pretty expensive and out of reach for many. The average cost of a public state university is in the region of $10,000 per year. That is quite a bit of money for anybody to raise and yet a college degree has become absolutely essential for you to get anywhere in this life. One of the huge advantages of getting African American scholarships is that you can finally get your degree without having to get into hassles and worries of working to pay for school. And the good news is that these scholarships are available for both men and women.

What many folks are not aware of is the fact that many companies now give scholarships and you will be able to get at least $10,000 in free funding from most to cover tuition costs, books and other expenses that go with a good college education.

And it doesn’t end there. You can get additional assistance from your local financial aid office where you should be able to find specific African American scholarships and grants programs.

What you need to do is to make sure that you apply to as many programs as you are qualified for. Remember competition is often high and so there is no need to apply for any scholarship that you can already see you are not qualified to receive.

However even with the keen competition the reality is that there are so many programs out there giving African American scholarships that you are guaranteed to find one that is perfect for you and which will have no problem granting you a scholarship or substantial grant.

To name a few of the most prominent; there is the Ron Brown Scholar program which is awarded based on excellent academic performance and financial need. Other considerations are participation in community service and the leadership potential of the individual. At least 10 high school seniors are awarded this scholarship every year.

Then there is the UNCF which is probably the most well known African American scholarships provider in the country. There is emphasis on internship programs so that even students from very low income families can easily afford to go through college.

Almost as famous is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) which usually gives out dozens of scholarships annually. It is important to note that a minimum 2.5 GPA is required for you to qualify for an undergraduate award and 3.0 GPA is required for graduate degrees.

There is also the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship which was set up in 1973 and this generous program has helped numerous colored people who would have otherwise completely been unable to get a college education, advance their education and enter into rewarding careers whose benefits have often extended far and wide into the impoverished communities amongst which they grew up.

The bottom line is that there are plenty of programs available and it is very difficult for serious students seeking African American scholarships to fail to find something suitable for them to advance their education and lay a solid foundation for the careers that they hope to pursue.

Scholarships For Hispanics – Do You Qualify For These Hispanic Scholarships?

Scholarships for Hispanics are given to any student who is of Hispanic descent. It is one of those scholastic grants that are exclusively geared towards the minorities who want to further their studies in college. Any program such as these are always good, since it affords the opportunity of allowing the less fortunate to achieve their dreams; especially if they do not have the means to allow them to enroll in an advanced and prestigious learning institution. What you are going to learn in this article are three of the scholarships grants where one of the recipients is the minority group in question. Read on and know what they are.

ABA Diversity Scholarship – The goal of this scholarship is to widen the population of those that are under represented in the field of travel, transportation, and tourism industry. Candidates are eligible if they have at least:

* completed first year of college from an accredited university.
* taken a major course related to travel, transportation, and tourism industry.
* possess a cumulative GPA score of 3.0.

The selections are to be based on:

* academic achievement
* character
* dedication in the chosen field of profession
* financial capability
* leadership

Berrien Fragos Thorn Arts Scholarships – This scholarship has been introduced in order to encourage and promote the creative talents of any individual who have a history of migration with an express desire to work in agriculture. Applicants who are eligible must have an interest in proceeding to advance their talents in the following areas of discipline:

* Crafts – furniture, folk arts, pottery, weaving, etc.
* Literary – short stories, poetry, etc.
* Media – animation, computer graphics, film, video, etc.
* Performing – music, theater, dancing, etc.
* Visual – sculpture, photography, painting, etc.

In addition, eligible applicants must:

* be at least 16 years of age
* not necessarily attended or enrolled in school
* present a Letter of Recommendation that address the quality of the applicant and the desired project.
* have prior history of migration with a desire to work in agriculture.

Alvarado-Garcia Scholarship (AGS) – This scholarship was established in collaboration with the Association of Latino Men for Action (ALMA) to advance and recognize topnotch Gay, Bisexual and Questioning Latino junior high school students who choose to enroll in an accredited two year college or four year university course in Illinois. In addition to the financial assistance, the grant provides a mentoring program in support to scholars who have the capability of bringing leadership qualities to their chosen profession. These scholars are eligible for a financial assistance of $1,000. The selection process is based on academic performance, eligibility criteria, and school or community activities.

Minority Scholarships

In today’s economy, the cost of going to college can be overwhelming. There are a lot of financial scholarships available for minority students. Often it is the case that students don’t know where to look or how to apply. The first and possibly the best resource for students is their school guidance counselor. The internet also provides a wealth of information as to where minority students can find information regarding minority scholarships.

The Gates Millennium Scholars are minority scholarships geared toward African American, American Indian, Asian American and Hispanic American students. This foundation will award scholarships to one thousand students who have significant financial need. This scholarship is good through graduation and can be used at any college or university. There are also no limitations on the area of interest or study that the student chooses. The Gates Millennium Scholars Foundation also offers assistance for graduate students. This is limited to students who are pursuing degrees in computer science, engineering, education, math, public health, science or library science.

The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) is a private source for minority scholarships. It offers funding to African American, American Indian and Latino students. It is open for both men or women who want to study engineering. NACME also provides scholarships to students who have attended community college, but wish to transfer and get a four year degree in a field of engineering.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation offers up to $ 7,500 to minority high school students. This assistance comes through their Education and Leadership Development program and provides assistance for students to attend a four year college or university of their choice. To apply for this award you must be a high school senior and you must meet the guidelines for the SAT and ACT scores.

The Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund offers financial assistance as well. Students must maintain a grade point average between 2.7 and 4.0. Students applying for assistance with APIASF must also apply for federal financial aid. High school counselors and parents can help complete the federal financial aide forms. They are available online or through your schools guidance counselor’s office. These scholarships are awarded to hundreds of eligible students each year.

The LaGrant Foundation is a scholarship program for minority students. The minority scholarships from LaGrant Foundation are directed toward African American, Asian and Pacific Islander American, Hispanic / Latino and Native American students. The guidelines for this $5,000 scholarship requires that the student is a full time student and that they maintain a 2.75 grade point average. These students must major in public relations, advertising, marketing or minor in communications. Students also are asked to make a one year commitment to maintain contact with the foundation.

The Ronald McDonald House scholarship program provides scholarships to Hispanic students in the states of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. These scholarships are based on financial need and academic achievement. ACT and SAT and other testing scores are also looked at as part of being awarded this scholarship.

One of the most popular and well known sources for scholarships for African American students is the United Negro College Fund. They offer a wide variety of programs and assistance other than scholarships.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund will provide a scholarship to a student who will attend a national public Historically Black College or University. Students must meed academic requirements and must have documentation showing that they have financial needs that remain unmet. These awards are granted on a semester by semester basis. These funds must be used for room and board, books and fees or tuition.

The internet offers a wide assortment of resources that are available to minority students for scholarships. Many of the scholarships are dependent on the school you choose to go to or the degree or field of study that you want to pursue. The easiest way to find out about these scholarships is to make those decisions regarding the school of choice and field of choice and start searching there. Some scholarships are also limited as to what they will pay for. Some scholarships may only pay room and board or some may only pay for book rental fees, or to purchase books. But in the economy today, every little bit will help!
